Giant Horo – Kukeri Asenovgrad (BG)

The Kukeri (or mummers) represent the tradition of Zagovezni (or “forgiveness”), which according to the local folkloric calendar is part of the spring festival.

The whole celebration is accompanied by a folkloric performance based on some fixed characters: a bear and a bear leader, a bride and a groom, an orchestra, a priest, a donkey, a nurse, a policeman and a family consisting of grandparents and children.
The Kukeri performances – with the help of special frightening masks and magical dances – aim to scare away ghosts and evil forces forever, and thus bring in the rich harvest all year round.
